3D printing is affecting the way engineers design in the automotive industry. The technology is already used in the industry, currently mostly for plastic and metal spare parts. Additive manufacturing has opened the door for newer designs, safer products, shorter lead times and lower costs. Moreover, it will be an enabler for the automotive industry to adapt towards the new smart mobility requirements.

Printed electronics can deliver interesting functionalities like lighting, interaction, sensors and have technologically a lot of potential for adjustment of properties to be processable in thermoforming and injection moulding. Holst Centre has focussed activities in this domain and in this presentation examples will be given of technological advances and unique business opportunities in field of automotive.

Ford and Carbon Digitally Manufacture New Durable, End-Use Parts

Carbon showed the first digitally manufactured polymer parts in production for Ford Motor Company. The parts include Ford Focus HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Cooling) Lever Arm Service Parts, Ford F-150 Raptor Auxiliary Plugs for a niche market, and Ford Mustang GT500 Electric Parking Brake Brackets.
The companies jointly presented the applications at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
